Participants in the Stories of Care creative writing project responded creatively to stories about 18th and 19th century Foundling Hospital pupils. Here is RL’s response inspired by tokens left at the Foundling Hospital.
1739 – After 17 years of tireless campaigning, Thomas Coram receives the Royal Charter from King George II to establish the Foundling Hospital. This was instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision.
It all started with a token. A simple silver gift meaning more than what the eye could see. A heart-shaped pendant. I look at it and see myself in the reflection and my family right beside me with their hand on my shoulder. I never knew that a simple object could bring such meaning and memories of all the ones I love the most. And they’re with me every step of the way.
