Marie-Louise’s family story 2014

Golden Thread by Marie-Louise Flexen

A golden thread, so thin it’s invisible to the naked eye, extends from my heart.
I follow the thread across a barren desert.
I climb mountains to find you and tread carefully across frozen lakes.
I stumble and fall, my courage lost.
I continue to search as I follow the thread, which guides me through
treacherous storms and the impossible challenges of difficult terrain.
I cling to the thread.
In blistering heat, I hold on to it, lost and confused through deep, dense forests and swamps.
I never stop looking and searching, believing that the thread will lead me to you. Come what may I wont let go.
Then, on a day like no other, I come across a portal.
I hear a calling drawing me closer and closer as I take one step at a time.
I look into the abyss and I see your small face with wide eyed stare.
Your little hands reach out, so longto find you, I pull you out with a tender and trembling heart.

Our threads entwine and join us together in this moment of our longing.

In 2014, my husband and I met our son. He was five and a half years old and had spent a year in foster care after being taken into emergency protection. Our journey to find him was shaped by the complex emotional terrains of loss, searching, and a deep, aching longing to become parents.

Entwined is a deeply personal, poetic dance film born from this poem I wrote in response to Coram’s Adoption Story project. It is an intimate reflection of my own path to motherhood, but also a tribute to the power of adoptive families. This film uses the expressive beauty of contemporary dance set against vast, cinematic terrains to mirror those difficult emotional landscapes we travel to find one another. At the heart of the piece is a symbolic thread, we stand entwined within it — a constant anchor that extends directly from our hearts and reaches out to one another. It is a visual promise that no one walks this path alone. Our hope is to reach prospective adopters on a deeply human level. We want to validate just how difficult the adoption process can be, while offering comfort and hope in the truth we lived. By sharing Entwined through public screenings, workshops, and featured articles, we hope to spark vital community conversations, inspire new families, and encourage people to believe that every child deserves a place to belong.
