Luke’s Story, 1982

I never knew you were adopted, but why would you?

I’d say I don’t wear a lanyard and besides, it’s not like in EastEnders.

There was no drum roll inducing reveal.

I’ve always known and it’s really not a big deal.

It’s just another fact about me, like how I watch F1 or prefer Blur to Oasis or love salt and vinegar crisps.

I was irritated that they thought it was something worth commenting on, but now, now I can see the expanse of it and that really I was upset about something else.

Poem by Luke Wright from Later Life Letter (Fleet, 2006)
