Next of Kin: A Portrait of Adoptive Families by Richard Ansett is part of a programme convened by Coram to recognise, review and reflect on the importance of the passing of the Adoption of Children Act in 1926 and the evolution of adoption.

For this project, Richard has worked with some of the families and children Coram support.

Travelling across the country, he has captured a collection of thoughtful and deeply personal portraits which reflect the experiences and stories at the heart of adoption.

These portraits remind us that adoption is ultimately about people and relationships. Behind every image is a story of belonging, resilience and family.

“ This project is by a child of adoption seeing myself in the faces of the young people negotiating with a shared sense of displacement and unconditional love that is unique to our experience. The power of the images – I hope – is in the celebration of adoption as something wonderfully ordinary and perhaps possible to imagine in the minds of future parents.”
